C8/C9 for years has offered a notion of a discount which is a percentage discount from the retail price. Latest version of c9 now gives you options for 2 other discounting strategies, 3 in total. You can configure each account with a different strategy and select strategy at point of sale.
Discount from Retail
This is how software has been behaving all many years. The discount is taken as a % of the retail price. So something selling for $8.00, a discount of 10% will discount the item to $7.20.
There is a risk with retail discounts; if you set discount too high, or if you discount low margin items, you may sell items below cost.
Discount from Margin
This new feature allows you to discount based on what the profit margin will be. Say an item is $8.00, it's cost is $7.00 then the margin is $1.00 A 10% discount in this case corresponds to a discount of 10% on $1.00 or $0.10c. Discount on margin has advantage that it is not possible to accidently discount beyond cost of the item. The disadvantage though is that a shrewd customer will be able to estimate what your retail markups are.
What cost price is used exactly?
For items sold out of stock then cost price used is the last in cost.
For items received on order, the cost price set on order when order was received is used. This defaults to either daily buy price or stock buy price depending on type of order.
When parts go on order and system recommends a deposit to take, the deposit calculation will assume daily buy price will apply.
Discount on Cost
A new feature again. The cost price is marked up the given percentage, and the discount given is calculated so that final price paid by the customer is equal to the cost price + markup + GST.
