Search Engine Optimisation November 3, 2012 barney

Trying to get your website to appear near the top of a Google or Bing search is both a black art and to a small extent a zero-sum game, because only 10 websites can occupy the top 10 search results.  You are competing with all other relevant websites who are also trying to lift their search profile.

C9 powered websites now include a number of features to help SEO savvy web designers optimize your site.  The following describes these and how to access them.

Website Search Engine Optimization October 26, 2012 barney

We just released first component of a SEO overhaul of C9 powered websites.

The changes are automatic and require no action or maintenance.  We are hoping that  these modifications will lift search visibility of c9 powered websites over coming weeks.

Similar changes for aussiebikefinder.com.au have also been implemented.

A second set of changes will be delivered shortly, which will also incorporate modifications in c9 itself to help sophisticated web site managers squeeze more out of their website.

Note that if you are using an iframe to host c9 content, then it is unlikely you will get any advantage from recent changes.  Broadly, SEO is the responsibility of your 'main' website. so many of the key changes only apply if c9 host your entire website.

Weekend Migration Progress October 21, 2012 barney

Over the weekend we are performing a number of maintenance activities.

  • Upgrade central database for c9 powered websites
  • Setup a second streaming replication backup server

Saturday Night/Sunday morning, service was down for about two hours. From 3 am to 5 am for live server upgrade.

I was hoping to also upgrade the first replication backup server during this time; but the upgrade path requires me to recopy the entire database. Which is going to take 16 hours; so I abandoned trying to do this while websites were down.

Luckily most of copying can occur while websites are still running.  Once copy is completed, I will need to take websites down again for about 15 minutes to establish and test the replication link.  This will happen Sunday night/monday Morning.

Monday I will commission the second replicate server and finalize the migration.  After another planned 15 minute outage late Sunday night, there should be no further planned downtime of c9 services.

Online backup tweaks August 27, 2012 barney

Online backup process sends a nightly email telling you status of backup.

The email will sometimes misreport an error with backup synchronization, especially over the weekend.  I've made some changes to the system to reduce likelihood of these annoying 'false positives'.

  • Email now reports when last data copy occurred and when last verification occurred.
    • Data copy is actual copying of data and it normally happens within 5 seconds of a change in c9, i.e. creating a new invoice
    • Verification is a periodic check to make sure copy in c9 is exactly the same as copy in backup.  It typically happens after c9 has been idle for 20 minutes.  For a typical shop which isn't too busy, verification can happen 3 or 4 times a day.  Usually it happens at least once a day, but c9 can go an entire day without a verification.  This typically happens on very busy days where computers are turned off at the end of the day (e.g. Saturday)
  • Email now only reports an error under following conditions
    • If a verification error occurs (almost never)
    • If verification has not been performed for over 7 days
    • If there has been neither data copy or verification in past 2 days

We recently implemented a new advertising campaign after having no success with facebook advertising and results are very promising.

The campaign was implemented on the 15th and since then we have seen a meaningful increase in traffic.

Web traffic is now capturing alot of web users browsing for second hand motorcycles and spare parts and many of those users are further clicking to go visit dealer websites.

It is still early days though we are quite excited by this result, especially considering how poorly facebook experiment went.  And we hope that this additional web traffic translates into additional business for our c9 customers.

Aussie bike finder listing is a free website. It is serviced and maintained by us at c9 for dealers that use c9.  Bike listing is part of c9 online backup package; all your second hand bikes will be automatically listed.  Spare parts are provided by c9 powered websites.  We allocate a small monthly advertising budget for promotion of the site.  For best possible results we recommend dealers also promote their website, via online advertising themselves and other means.

Remote access changes May 23, 2012 barney

I just rebuild and installed a new version of c9 remote access java client/applet.  A few minor fixes and tweaks included; such as proper handling of Escape key on Mac OSX clients.

C9 now permits integration into bikesales.com.au.

When the integration is in place, any units you nominate on your floor stock will be synchronized to bikesales.  If you sell or otherwise remove the units from the floor, the listing will be removed off bikesales.

Synchronization happens each night. Listing changes should propagate shortly after 5 am.  C9 will send you an email overnight advising you on synchronization status.

There are many ways to skin a c9 powered website. Various options available to you to help the dealer you are working with differentiate their online web business beyond the basic controls built into c9 itself.

c9 online websites with fiche diagrams categorize diagrams into different sections. i.e. 'Rear Wheel', 'Wiring Harness' etc.  C9 does this by looking at the name of a diagram and matching it against a rule to figure out what category it is.

The rules built into c9 are tuned originally for Honda and KTM early 2011 but little work has happened since then and there is no consistency across suppliers.  Result is as of time of writing this, of the 1.2 million diagrams hosted on c9 powered websites, 15% of those diagrams are located in the 'Uncategorized' section on the website.

Managing mapping of diagrams is tedious work, which is why we created tools in c9 so that you can do this task :-). Read on for more
